Water Savvy Garden Tour

Each spring, CVWD hosts a Water Savvy Garden Tour to educate residents about
the beauty and benefits of water saving landscapes.

About the Tour

Since it's inception in 2009, the Water Savvy Garden Tour has educated over 850 residents on how they can make changes in their yards to use water efficiently. The tour typically includes visits to 10-15 sites - including commercial sites, public parks and parkways, and homes - that have installed low-water use plants, efficient irrigation systems, and hardscapes. The tour includes residential landscapes that are winners from CVWD’s annual Water Savvy Landscape Contest.

2022 Highlights

The Cucamonga Valley Water District (CVWD/District) hosted its Water Savvy Garden Tour on Saturday, April 23, to educate residents about the value and beauty of water savvy landscapes. Participants joined the self-guided tour to learn how they can make changes in their yards to be more water efficient. Over one hundred participants walked away with the knowledge and motivation to transform their water guzzling grass into an attractive, water-saving landscape.

Participants began at CVWD where they were given maps and materials and saw the water district’s demonstration landscapes. They visited 15 examples of low-water using landscapes throughout the community, including residential landscapes that were previously selected as winners for CVWD’s Landscape Contest.

"The Water Savvy Garden Tour was great!” commented a tour participant. “I was particularly impressed with the variety of landscaping available for the purpose of conserving water. Creativity is certainly the name of the game and many of the designs were just beautiful.”

Participants visited with featured landscape owners  to learn straight from the source what plants and design elements work well in our warm climate. By viewing multiple variations of attractive, water saving landscapes, participants are inspired to make improvements in their own landscapes, resulting in water savings while beautifying the community.

Partnerships

CVWD’s Garden Tour provides the opportunity to build valuable partnerships with groups such as the Maloof Foundation and the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners, who acted as docents at various tour locations. Additionally, featured landscape owners participated at their homes by sharing their experiences with tour participants, so participants could ask questions and learn first-hand about their landscaping successes.
